Collection: Mauna Kahālāwai

What if Lahaina's story is not a single chapter, but a living narrative, flowing from the highest peaks to the ocean's edge? We believe it is.

For generations, the story of Lahaina has flowed from the high peaks of Mauna Kahālāwai, where life begins. Yet, over time, the mountain's voice has been muffled by a forgotten past. This collection is a quest to listen again, to a story whispered by the nearly extinct Cyanea Heluensis, a plant with white blossoms and long, curved flowers. Discovered on the slopes of Helu, this solitary survivor is a living testament to a history our kūpuna knew, and a call for us to remember the wai (water) that shapes every facet of Lahaina.

The discovery of the Cyanea Heluensis underscores a vital truth: that the health and resilience of our land are profoundly connected to our memory of its origins. This plant, now being carefully propagated to ensure its survival, represents a powerful new beginning. It is a testament to this truth: healing our land begins with honoring its natural processes and stories.

This collection is the first chapter of our Mauka to Makai narrative, a profound journey from the mountain's whispers to the ocean's roar. The design, a reflection of the Cyanea Heluensis blooming among the ʻōhiʻa, is a powerful symbol of life at its source. It is the prequel to our Unahi Wai collection, which celebrates the return of life to the shores of Mala.

This collection is woven from our kuleana, our deep responsibility to be better stewards of the ʻāina (land) and our precious natural resources, especially wai (water). That's why we chose TENCEL™. A premium, plant based fiber crafted from sustainably sourced wood pulp, TENCEL™ is celebrated for its light, breathable feel, smooth finish, and clean, structured drape. It has no stretch, making it ideal for creating timeless pieces that hold their shape while feeling weightless against the skin.

What makes TENCEL™ truly special goes far beyond feel. It's biodegradable, meaning that at the very end of its life, it returns to the earth without leaving behind harmful microplastics or toxins in our precious wai and ʻāina. Yet, this is not a fragile fabric. TENCEL™ is known for its strength, durability, and long lasting quality, made to move with you through life while also respecting the land we walk on. Our commitment extends to its production; TENCEL™ is created in a closed loop system that recycles water and solvents, significantly reducing environmental impact. It's also OEKO-TEX® certified, rigorously tested and cleared of harmful substances, making it safer for our bodies and better for our keiki’s future.
