Introduce a piece of history to your wardrobe with the 'Ulu Palaka in Keaka Men's Aloha Shirt, a special creative union between Henōhea and Kōnane Farm Store.

This collection is more than just apparel.... it is a story woven directly from the fabric of our family and the history of the 'āina (land). Co-created with Lexi Kōnane, founder of Kōnane Farm Store, sister-in-law, and dedicated mother, this collaboration is rooted in 'ohana and the organic connection of working with family.

This exclusive print merges two profound legacies:

  • The Spirit of Palaka More than just the "denim of Hawaiʻi," Palaka is a historic symbol of resistance. Originally the uniform of plantation laborers, this durable checked fabric became a banner of solidarity during the labor strikes of the mid-1900s. Workers from diverse backgrounds wore Palaka to stand united against the "Big Five" plantation owners, transforming a humble work shirt into a powerful emblem of defiance, unity, and the resilience of the people.
  • Malu 'Ulu O Lele Named for the ancient proverb "Lahaina i ka malu 'ulu o Lele" (Lahaina, in the shade of the breadfruit trees of Lele), this design remembers a time when Lele was not a dry, sun baked land, but a lush wetland shaded by vast groves of 'ulu. Historically, the diversion of water for sugar plantations desiccated these lands, altering the ecosystem and contributing to the dry conditions that fueled the 2023 fires. This collection serves as a commitment to the future, believing that the blueprint for restoring Lahaina lies in returning to the abundance and balance of Ka Malu 'Ulu o Lele.

In honor of Kōnane Farm Store’s mission of kuleana (responsibility) and lā'au lapa'au (healing), we were meticulous in our fabric choice. Crafted from a premium blend of 90% Cotton and 10% Tencel™, this shirt offers the durability of cotton with the silky breathability and sustainability of Tencel.

Fabric & Care

Our pieces are crafted from a premium blend of 95% Bamboo and 5% Elastane. We chose this specific blend for its luxurious drape, softness, and breathable comfort, perfect for island living and gentle on sensitive skin.

Care Instructions
To preserve the life of your garment and the vibrancy of our signature ʻulu print:

  • Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with like colors.
  • Use mild, eco-friendly detergent to protect the natural fibers and AZO-free dyes.
  • Lay flat to dry is recommended, or tumble dry on low heat.
  • Iron on a low setting only if needed.
  • Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals, which can break down the integrity of the bamboo fibers.

A Note on Natural Processes
Because we prioritize OEKO-TEX® certified materials and reactive, AZO-free dyes, you may notice slight variations or a natural shift in color over time. We embrace these changes as a sign of the fabric’s natural integrity and our journey away from the harsh, toxic "perfection" of big box fashion.

Our Commitment

From Factory to Family
At Henōhea, we believe that the story of a garment begins long before it reaches your hands. The choices we make in our manufacturing process have a ripple effect that touches everyone involved, from the factory workers to the surrounding communities where our pieces are created.

Human Centered Production & Safety
Traditional textile manufacturing often exposes workers to hazardous chemicals and releases toxic runoff into their local water sources. By insisting on a closed-loop system and OEKO-TEX® certified materials, we are advocating for a safer environment for the hands that carefully craft our collections. Our use of AZO-free reactive dyes ensures that our colors bond to the fiber rather than leaching onto your skin or into the water. This choice minimizes the risk of respiratory issues and skin sensitivities for workers and protects the health of the communities surrounding our manufacturing facilities.

Protecting the ʻĀina and Beyond
When we keep solvents out of the environment at the source, we are protecting global waterways that eventually connect us all. For us, this is a commitment to the ʻāina that extends from the place of origin to right here in Maui, ensuring that the legacy we leave behind is one of abundance and health, not toxicity.

The Full Circle
While we strive for the highest standards, we want to be transparent: achieving a 100% toxic-free status is an almost impossible challenge in the current global textile industry. We recognize that perfection is not always attainable, but we are deeply committed to learning, growing, and pivoting with every collection to find cleaner ways forward not just for our customers, but for the people who make our brand possible and the world where our pieces eventually land.
